Five Challenges Facing Beginner Photographers – And How to Beat Them

July 19, 2023

Introduction

When I first entered the photography industry, I vividly remember the many challenges I encountered when starting out. The journey from a beginner photographer to a professional can be rough, filled with frequent stumbling blocks and silly mistakes. However, these challenges are not insurmountable. With a bit of guidance and perseverance, anyone can overcome them and find their unique voice in the photography industry. In this article, I will take you through five common problems that beginner photographers face and share tips and ideas on how to solve each one of them.

Editing Photos – It Takes Too Long and is Expensive

After entering the photography industry, one of the first challenges I encountered was the seemingly endless and expensive process of editing photos. As a beginner photographer, it might feel like you spend more time in front of your computer tweaking images than actually taking pictures. Plus, editing software can be pretty expensive, which is a significant hurdle when you’re starting out.

To overcome this challenge, consider utilizing free or affordable editing software instead of immediately opting for costly options. Tools like Adobe Lightroom and GIMP are excellent for beginners. They offer a wide range of editing tools and are easy to use. In terms of time, developing a workflow that suits your style is essential. Instead of editing each photo individually, try batch editing, applying the same adjustments to multiple images simultaneously. This can drastically cut down your editing time.

Landscape Photos Lack Impact

Transitioning from basic snapshots to impactful landscape photos was another challenge. Beginner photographers often struggle to capture a landscape’s grandeur and beauty in a way that resonates with the viewer.

The key to overcoming this issue lies in understanding composition, light, and depth. Use the rule of thirds to compose your shots, and try to include a foreground, middle ground, and background to create depth. Additionally, rather than shooting in harsh midday light, aim for golden hours — right after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft and warm. This will add a magical touch to your landscape photos.

Pitch a Story Idea that Captures the Attention of the Audience

In the photography industry, it’s not enough to just capture beautiful images; you also need to be able to tell a compelling story through your photos. As a beginner photographer, I struggled with this a bit. I had a hard time pitching story ideas that genuinely captured the audience’s attention.

The solution to this problem is to think deeply about what you want to communicate through your images. What emotions do you want to evoke in your audience? What message do you want to convey? Once you have a clear idea, sketch out a storyboard to visualize your narrative. This will help you capture not just beautiful but also meaningful photos that resonate with your audience.

Making Your Work Stand Out

With the rise of social media, the photography industry is more competitive than ever. Beginner photographers often struggle to make their work stand out amidst the ocean of images flooding the internet.

To rise above the crowd, developing your unique style is crucial. This doesn’t happen overnight but requires consistent practice and experimentation. Feel free to break the rules and try out new things. Your style reflects who you are as an artist, so let your personality shine through your work. Also, seek inspiration from different genres of photography, art, and even everyday life.

Protecting Mental Health

Lastly, it’s essential to discuss a less-discussed but equally important challenge in this business — protecting mental health. Being a beginner photographer can be stressful. You constantly compare your work with others, deal with the fear of failure, and sometimes face harsh criticism. All these can take a toll on your mental health.

It’s essential to remember that everyone’s journey is different. Progress at your own pace, and don’t compare your chapter one with someone else’s chapter twenty. Embrace failure as a part of growth and consider criticism as an opportunity to learn. Most importantly, take breaks when needed and engage in activities you enjoy apart from photography.

In conclusion, starting in the photography industry can be challenging, but remember that every professional was once a beginner. With patience, perseverance, and the right approach, you can overcome these challenges and make your mark in the photography world.
