How to Prepare for Your Engagement Pictures

So he popped the question, you’ve got the ring, and now you’ve officially changed your Facebook relationship status so that everyone can see the good news! Now it’s come time to take all of those beautiful, heartwarming engagement pictures for you two love birds to treasure and share to the world. However, now you face the difficult part: what do you wear? How do you prepare? What shouldn’t you wear? Hiring a professional photographer is an investment, and you want to be sure you are doing your part to create photos you are proud of. We’ve compiled a list of everything you need to know before stepping out the door for the photo shoot, and how to make sure that everything is picture perfect:

DO: Dress Appropriately for the Occasion

One of the most common mistakes I see new couples make for their engagement pictures is treating their engagement session as just any old photo shoot. This is quite possibly the most important step in your lives! Take this opportunity to dress up and look your best. Ladies- you can never go wrong with a nice dress or skirt/blouse look. Keep it flattering, yet classy. If you need to do some shopping, we have a great selection of shops downtown including: J Crew, Kate Spade New York, Impeccable Pig, Copper Penny, Harper, and Dress Up. Depending on your location and/or preference, nice flats or heels work perfectly. Gentleman- stick with a nice, clean tailored suit with accents to match your fiancé. Make sure you have polished dress shoes too! The camera catches everything, especially if your shoes are scuffed and beaten. If you’re having trouble coming up with ideas for the perfect ensemble, look at some of our other engagement sessions, or go to StyleMePretty.com and browse around there for a while!

DON’T: Show Up Late and Unprepared

It happens to the best of us: we all schedule an appointment for weeks in advance, and then file it in the back of our minds, thinking we’ll naturally remember everything we need. Your engagement photos are a huge deal, they give you the opportunity to meet with your photographer, practice for the big day, and get some professional photos taken that you can use for all sorts of occasions. The worst thing you can do is show up late and unprepared to your shoot. Take the time to make sure your outfits are clean and pressed, your shoes are polished and tidy, and that your hair and makeup both look on point. On the day of your shoot, arrive 10-15 minutes earlier than your scheduled time. Your photographer is taking the time to schedule this appointment to celebrate this momentous occasion for you both, and sometimes has more appointments right after yours: be courteous of their time and yours.

DO: Treat Yourself!

Ladies: your engagement photos are the perfect excuse to go pamper yourself and practice for the big day! A popular choice for many brides is to have their test hair/makeup appointment with their makeup artist on the same day that they have their engagement photos taken. This not only gives you the chance to decide exactly how you want to look on your wedding day, but also allows you to come into your engagement session feeling beautiful and confident. We also highly recommend getting a facial close to your engagement session to give your skin that fresh bridal glow. Gentleman: make sure to trim any facial hair to look nice and clean, and be sure to wear your best deodorant! Most engagement shoots are done outside in the Savannah heat, and the last thing anyone wants in their engagement session is to have pit stains. For both the future bride and groom: be sure to get a haircut close to the day of your session. This allows for your hair to be in its best shape, and ensures that there are no split ends caught in your photos.

DO: Consider Renting Your Outfits

Nowadays, there are so many companies that allow you to rent stunning outfits for a fraction of the cost! Ladies, if you are having a hard time finding an outfit that makes you feel your best and is in your price range, consider looking into websites such as RenttheRunway.com. Here, you can rent just about any type of dress for close to nothing, and look like a million bucks while doing it. Gentleman, you can even rent nice suits from places like Men’s Wearhouse for a low price as well. Be sure to contact your local store for discounts and specials coming up.

Getting engaged is one of the most special times of your life, and these pictures are such a perfect way to capture the love and excitement of these moments. Using the above steps will only help to enhance your shoot and create lasting images that you will cherish for life. Above all else, enjoy these magical times with your loved one, and use this opportunity to take a break from the wedding planning and have fun with your engagement pictures!
